November in Room 1

We were back with a bang in Room 1 after the midterm break. With lots of new activities and a brand new Aistear theme, plenty of hard work, learning and fun could been seen in Room 1. Here is a little snippet of what we have gotten up to.

This month, the children have been lucky enough to engage in both Pilates and GAA for PE. Have a look at some of their amazing skills and balances- their muscles are certainly becoming very big and strong!

The children have been learning all about animals and the Vets for Aistear. In the role-play and small world areas, the boys and girls worked very hard at helping the sick animals by checking their temperature, giving them injections and listening to their heartbeat with a stethoscope. The boys and girls also came up with a list of questions for Emily, the Vet Nurse, who then recorded a video answering these questions.

Room 1 continues to be beautifully decorated with the children’s gorgeous artwork. Have a look at our rocket ships, our Mondrian-inspired art and our swans inspired by the Children of Lir.

The children have moved onto Number in Maths and have been doing so well at making sets of 1, 2 and 3, identifying these numbers and writing these numbers. Have a look at all of the fun ways we explored number for the first time.

The children have continued to develop key skills to prepare them for reading and writing. They have been doing so well that they have begun learning about letter sounds. They are also really enjoying their weekly storybooks and this month, they had a chance to read the story ‘Farmer Duck’ in pairs. They did so well at following the story with the teacher and finding the right pages.

This month, we also had the chance to learn about magnets. Using magnets, we investigated which items the magnets were attracted to. While all of the items that the magnets stuck to appeared to be metal, we noticed that it didn’t stick to some metal items, such as the door handle. We then learned that magnets only stick to strong metals such as iron.

It was Science week during the month of November as a result, the children engaged in the Dancing Raisins experiment. In this they compared the movement of raisins in water and in 7Up. We noticed that in the 7UP, the raisins began to ‘dance’ and bounce up and down! This is because the raisins collected the gas bubbles in the 7Up and these caused them to move!

We also received daffodil bulbs to plant this month. To prepare for this, the children helped paint a pot for the daffodils. They later planted the bulbs outside. Well done to the boys and girls and a special thanks to Mr. Garvey and Paul for all of their organisation.

We are so proud of the children for all they have achieved this month. Here’s to an equally successful and fun-filled December!
