Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022

Between Book Week, the Book Fair and our school’s Holi celebrations, March sure was a very busy month in Scoil Chormaic. However, in the middle of it all, we did not forget to celebrate one of our favourite school traditions of all- Seachtain na Gaeilge. Over the course of the week, the children celebrated and participated in a range of activities to promote Irish Language and Culture. This included learning about Ireland through music, dance, art, drama and most importantly through making that extra bit of effort to speak cúpla focal!

We had our annual Lá Glás to kick off the Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations. This is a special non-uniform day where children and staff make an effort to wear green to school. It was a wonderful start to a wonderful week.

Because Seachtain na Gaeilge fell around the same time as our school’s Holi celebrations, many of the art activities combined aspects of both to create beautiful, multi-coloured art across the school.

To further promote using the Irish language as much as possible, the children engaged in a number of competitions with special prizes throughout the week. This included seeking the Gaeilgeoir an Lae (Irish speaker of the day), Gaeilgeoir na Seachtaine (Irish speaker of the Week) and a comórtas filíochta (poetry competition). Below are some of the winners to these competitions- comghairdeachas gach duine!

Some classes also engaged in small dramas where they role-played delivering the nuacht (news) and explained the Frása an Lae (phrase of the day). These dramas were shared across the school for all of the classes to enjoy and the children looked forward to seeing them every day. Maith sibh to all the actors involved!

Perhaps our favourite part of the week was when two local musicians performed to each class. They sang traditional songs and ballads while we all sang and danced along. It was the most craic that we had all week, even Mr. Butler and Mr. Swaine took to the stage and joined the musicians! Go raibh maith agaibh to John and Damo for joining us at Scoil Chormaic, it was certainly the highlight of Seachtain na Gaeilge.
